If everyone admits that they are unique as individuals, how can the things they make become homogeneous?
— Dan Dong

28 May - 30 June

Dan Dong (但东) born in China in 1991, Dandong is a contemporary ceramic artist known for his innovative approach to traditional Chinese ceramics. After graduating from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2015, he founded the Zaizi Ceramic Studio in 2020, focusing on black-glazed pottery. His work draws deep inspiration from ancient ceramics, especially the Jizhou kiln’s "Black Widow" cups, famed for their profound luster.

Blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design, he uses high-iron soil from southwest China to create dark red teapots that enhance both aesthetics and functionality. His Mei Ping vases, characterized by reduced bases and expanded bellies, draw inspiration from Chinese painting and architecture, achieving a dynamic balance.

Viewing ceramics as a medium for historical and cultural storytelling, Dandong constantly experiments with materials and techniques. His work, merging past and present, aims to resonate globally and bring new appreciation to traditional Chinese ceramics.
